Instructions for painting laminate countertops

August 26th, 2010 at 06:30 pm

Sorry it has taken so long, but here we go... All these items can be purchased at WM.

1. Clean the countertops with a 50/50 mixture of vinegar and water.

2. Sand the cpoutertops with a med. grit sandpaper. (I used a sanding block)

3. Repeat step 1 and wait for it to dry.

4. Prime with a white or black oil based primer. (I bought one quart of black Rust-Oleum and used a sm foam roller.)

5. Wait 24 hrs for the primer to cure. (I was impatient and only waited about 5 hrs.) Smile

6. Sponge coordinating acrylic paints over the primer until the look you want is achieved. These paints can be found in the craft section of any big box store. I bought the 8oz bottles of Apple Barrel brand. I also used balled up sheets of paper towels to apply (many of them) because it gave it a more random look. You can mix and match the paints to give a more muted look also.

7. Wait several hours for that to dry.

8. Apply water-based polycrylic using a good quality synthetic brush. (I used Minwax) I applied 6 coats waiting 2 hrs between coats. Sand lightly when dry between coats.

Cost for supplies was roughly $55.00

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.

Remodeling on the cheap

Let me start by saying my kitchen is awful. Circa 1981. I really need new cabinets, countertops, and floor. Appliances would be nice too. Smile

Okay, back to reality...

I have been researching the internet on how to paint the laminate. There are several kits that can be ordered online, but i just bought the supplies at my local big box store. I applied the primer, and hubby helped paint to mimic granite. I was scared starting out, but really couldn't get any worse than what we had. We are pretty happy with the results so far. We are waiting for the paints to cure, then I will poly. Spent $46.00 so far on counter paint. I want to keep track of my spending as I want to keep whole remodel under $500 including the floor and light fixtures.
Next we are going to paint the ugly 4" white tile backslash to mimic limestone. Still need to do more research on that.

Everyone have a great day!

I ran across this site and I am so happy I did. My husband and I are debt free except for our mortgage. We have 3 children who are the lights of our lives. I am a SAHM who is enjoying every minute of it. Hope to learn a lot from this site.
